Premise-Based Improv Classes
Learn to find the game in an idea, and build an entire show around it.
What’s covered in our premise-based course?
Premise-based improv starts with a strong comedic idea, drawn from an opening – a monologue, an interview, a video. We train students to distil what’s funny from that opening and use it to drive every scene that follows. Basically, you have a Game that’s ready to play from the start.
Level 1 teaches “The Armando”, where an opening monologue provides the ideas that inspire every scene. Level 2 moves into “The Harold”, one of the most celebrated long-form structures in improv: there are three sections (or beats), and scenes within them are built on fun ideas taken from an opening. Scenes connect, develop and pay off across the whole show. It’s complicated, but exciting.
After completing Premise Level 2, students can apply to audition for the FA’s house Harold Teams.
Our Foundation Level 3 (Game) course is a prerequisite. Note: it is not possible to join this pathway with experience from other schools.

Frequently Asked
Questions
Do I qualify for the Premise Pathway?
You need to have completed the FA’s Foundation Level 3 (Game) course to join Premise Level 1. Level 2 follows on from Level 1. If you haven’t reached Level 3 yet, start with our Foundation Classes. Note that - unlike our other pathways - it is not possible to join this course with experience from other schools.
What if I have improv experience from elsewhere?
The Premise Pathway is the one exception to our usual policy: prior experience from other schools is not accepted as a prerequisite for this course. You’ll need to complete our Foundation pathway first.
Do I have to do both levels?
No. Each level in our Premise-based Pathway is booked separately. Most students do go on to Level 2, but you can start with Level 1 and see how you get on.
What happens at the end of the course?
Both levels end with a public class show … so you can perform what you’ve been working on in front of a real audience.
Can I hold a place with a deposit?
Yes. You can pay 25% when you check out, and the remainder before the course starts.
