Why take an
improv class?

Learning to improvise – to listen properly, think on your feet, and commit to the moment – turns out to be useful pretty much everywhere. Get better at performing, better at communicating, and better at not freezing when something unexpected happens.

Also: it’s a lot of fun.

What is improv comedy?

Improv is unscripted – a comedy format where shows are made up in the moment. Unlike “short-form” improv where people play games on stage, in “long-form” improv we focus on scenes, characters, relationships, stakes. We build a whole world from audience suggestions. Intrigued? Our Level 1 course for complete beginners is the place to start. (Or, check out our 1-day Taster Class).

What’s covered in Level 1?

Whether you take our 8-week course or 4-day intensive, this first level teaches you the fundamental principles of The Free Association style of long-form improvisation.

We start with the basic skills: actively listening and co-operating with team mates, agreeing and building (“yes and”), playing and being spontaneous, and practicing some improvised scenework.

There is no prerequisite for this course. Anyone can join, regardless of previous experience. If you have done a little improv training before but not much in this style, we recommend that you start here.

What you will learn

The principles of “yes and” in improv (agree and build)
Confidence in performing on stage
Space work basics – using mime to bring scenes to life
How to use emotion in improv scenes, and the importance of commitment
How to improvise a whole scene from beginning to end from a one-word suggestion

Hear from our Headteacher...

“We’ve designed every level in a way that helps our students become funnier. When someone finishes a course at The Free Association, they know what they’ve learned and why it makes them a better performer. That doesn’t happen by accident: it happens because we care deeply about the craft of improv, and obsess over how people learn to do it properly.”

Alex Holland FA School Headteacher

Frequently Asked
Questions

I have zero experience doing improv. Will I be OK?

You’ll be absolutely fine. In fact, this is the best place to start learning. Don’t worry: your teacher and the rest of the class will have your back.

Do I have to pay the whole fee up front?

Only if that suits you. When you check out, there will be an option to pay a 25% deposit payment. The remainder of the course fee is due before the start of class. Full payment terms outlined here (T&Cs page)

Who will be my teacher?

Whilst all our trainers bring unique experience and expertise to their lessons, they all know our style and syllabus inside out, so your improv education will be the same regardless of who is running your class. Your teacher will introduce themselves by email before the first class.

I have some improv experience. Is this the class for me?

Students with significant long-form improv training are sometimes able to start at Level 2. Please contact us on hello@thefreeassociation.co.uk to check where you should start.

Why should I choose to study at The Free Association?

Every FA teacher is an active performer. They perform the same style of long-form improv they teach, which means the feedback you get in class comes from people who do this for real.

Our courses follow a structured syllabus with a clear progression from fundamentals to advanced technique. You’ll get personalised notes, not just encouragement – and a genuine sense of how you’re improving week to week.
