Next classes start August
Prerequisite Level 2
Duration 8 weeks or 4-day intensive
Sessions 8 × 3 hours

What’s covered in Level 3?

Knowing how to find what’s funny in a scene, and keep it going, is a specific skill. Our Level 3 class is an in-depth study of “Game of the Scene” (and our whole approach to comedy), with a focus on finding and repeating comedic patterns, character point of view, and heightening the game.

Delivered over 8 weeks or as a 4-day intensive, this course is the final step in the Foundation pathway … and culminates in a public class show.

Level 2 at the FA is a prerequisite.

What you will learn

How to find and maintain a “Game” through a scene – playing with what’s funny
How to find and play a character’s point of view, to comedic effect
The difference between the “voice of reason” and the unusual character, and how to play each
How to perform the “Montage” format, and follow the fun on stage
Some of the fundamentals behind other improv formats

Frequently Asked
Questions

Do I have to have done Level 2 at the FA to do the Level 3 course?

Yes: Level 2 is a prerequisite. Email us at hello@thefreeassociation.co.uk if you want to learn more.

Do I have to pay the full fee upfront?

Only if that suits you. When you check out, there will be an option to pay a 25% deposit. The remainder of the course fee is due before the start of class. Full payment terms are outlined in our T&Cs.

Who will be my teacher?

Whilst all our trainers bring unique experience and expertise to their lessons, they all know our style and syllabus inside out, so your improv education will be the same regardless of who is running your class. Your teacher will introduce themselves by email before the first class.

Is there a performance at the end of the course?

Yes! Level 3 ends with a public class show at The Free Association, so you will have a chance to perform in front of a real audience.

How long after Level 2 can I join Level 3?

You can progress straight to Level 3 as soon as you’ve completed Level 2, or wait a few months if that suits your schedule better. Students returning after a long break: speak to us about the best place to rejoin the course.

Why should I choose The Free Association?

Every FA teacher is an active performer. They perform the same style of long-form improv they teach, which means the feedback you get in class comes from people who do this for real.

Our courses follow a structured syllabus with a clear progression from fundamentals to advanced technique. You’ll get personalised notes, not just encouragement – and a genuine sense of how you’re improving week to week.

Ready for the stage?

Once you’ve completed Level 3, the world is your oyster. We’d recommend one of our Performance Pathways: choose Premise-based, Narrative or Organic Improv, to open up more audition and performance opportunities.
